Expressions can show fixed values, rates, grouped quantities, and operations described in words. Rewriting an expression can reveal a useful contextual meaning.

Key notation

Worked example
If each box has 6 items and there are $n+2$ boxes, the expression $6(n+2)$ shows the total items. Expanded, it is $6n+12$.
Common mistakes
- Phrases such as 'twice the difference' require parentheses.
- Less-than phrasing can reverse the spoken order.
