Expression interpretation in context

Expressions can show fixed values, rates, grouped quantities, and operations described in words. Rewriting an expression can reveal a useful contextual meaning.

Least you need to know

  • A constant often represents an initial or fixed amount.
  • A coefficient often represents a unit rate.
  • Parentheses group quantities that are acted on together.

Key notation

  • a+br — A fixed amount plus a rate times a variable

Worked example

If each box has 6 items and there are $n+2$ boxes, the expression $6(n+2)$ shows the total items. Expanded, it is $6n+12$.

Common mistakes

  • Phrases such as 'twice the difference' require parentheses.
  • Less-than phrasing can reverse the spoken order.

How to recognize it

  • The question asks what a number or expression represents.
  • The choices are algebraic expressions matching a verbal description.
